A variable-speed pool pump is the single best energy upgrade for pool owners. Unlike single-speed pumps that run at full power, variable-speed pumps adjust RPM to the task: low speed for daily circulation (saves 80% energy), medium speed for filtration, and high speed for vacuuming and backwashing. If you still have a single-speed pump, consider upgrading. The $600–$1,200 investment typically pays back in 1–3 years through electricity savings. Run the pump at 1,100–1,500 RPM for 8–12 hours daily—this moves plenty of water for filtration using a fraction of the power. Run at 2,400–3,450 RPM for 2–3 hours for skimming and water features. Summer Chemical Balance

Hot summer sun accelerates chlorine consumption and algae growth. Test pool water at least twice weekly during peak season. Maintain free chlorine at 1–3 PPM, pH at 7.4–7.6, alkalinity at 80–120 PPM, and cyanuric acid (stabilizer) at 30–50 PPM. Shock the pool weekly or after heavy rain and high bather load. Brush walls and floor weekly to prevent algae establishment. Use a pool cover when the pool is not in use to reduce evaporation, chemical loss, and heat gain. Consider a salt chlorine generator if you want consistent chlorine levels without manual dosing. Run the pump after adding chemicals to ensure proper circulation.
