Consider your water hardness—hard water requires a unit with a built-in water management system or a separate water softener. Connect the water supply line (usually ¼-inch copper or plastic tubing) from a cold water line to the humidifier solenoid valve. Install a saddle valve or tee fitting on the water line. Connect the solenoid wire to the furnace control board (usually to the HUM terminal). Mount the humidistat on a return duct or interior wall and wire it to the humidifier and furnace. Seasonal Maintenance

Humidifier maintenance is seasonal. At the start of the heating season (fall): replace the evaporative pad (if bypass or fan-powered type), clean the water distribution tray and drain pan, check the solenoid valve screen for debris, and verify the humidistat is calibrated. During the heating season: check the unit monthly during operation—ensure the drain line is flowing and the pad is wetting evenly. If the unit has a water panel, replace it if scaling is visible. At the end of the season (spring): turn off the water supply and shut off the humidistat. Clean the unit thoroughly and dry the interior. For steam humidifiers: descale the tank every 1–3 months using the manufacturer-recommended cleaner. Leaving water in a dormant steam unit causes rapid scale buildup and bacterial growth.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If the humidifier does not produce humidity: check that the water supply valve is open, the saddle valve is not clogged, and the solenoid valve is getting power (check with a multimeter at HUM terminals). If water runs continuously: the solenoid valve is stuck open and needs replacement. If the pad does not wet evenly: the water distributor tray may be clogged—clean the holes with a pin. If the humidistat reads but the unit does not run: the humidistat may be wired incorrectly or the furnace circuit board HUM terminal is not activating. If window condensation appears: humidity is set too high—reduce the humidistat setting. If a musty smell develops: the pad may be growing mold or bacteria—replace it and flush the unit with a vinegar solution.
