Drainage Solutions

Adding or improving drainage fixes many retaining wall problems without rebuilding. Install a perforated drain pipe (4-inch PVC) behind the wall at the base, wrapped in filter fabric to prevent soil clogging. The pipe should slope ¼ inch per foot to daylight or a drainage outlet. Add 12 inches of ¾-inch clean crushed stone behind the wall from the base to within 6 inches of the top. Preventative Retaining Wall Care

Preventative maintenance extends retaining wall life significantly. Inspect your wall after heavy rain events—look for soil washing through joints, new cracks, or leaning sections. Keep the top of the wall clear of debris that traps moisture. Maintain good drainage: ensure weep holes are not clogged, drain pipes are flowing, and the ground behind the wall slopes away. Trim vegetation growing through the wall (roots force joints apart). Inspect and clean drainage pipes annually with a garden hose. In freezing climates, ensure the base of the wall is below the frost line (typically 36–48 inches) to prevent frost heave. For walls over 3 feet tall, schedule a professional inspection every 5 years. A well-built retaining wall with proper drainage and annual care lasts 50+ years.
