What Is a GFCI Outlet?

How to Install a GFCI Outlet

GFCI outlets have a finite lifespan—they contain sensitive electronics that can fail over time. Test every GFCI in your home monthly. Press TEST—the outlet should click and RESET should pop out. Plug a nightlight into the outlet and confirm it is off. Press RESET, confirm the nightlight turns on. If the GFCI does not trip when TEST is pressed, it has failed and must be replaced immediately. GFCIs can wear out after 10–15 years, especially those exposed to moisture or frequent tripping. Replace any GFCI that feels loose when you plug in a device, shows signs of corrosion, or has a discolored face. Keep a record of GFCI locations and test dates.
Troubleshooting Common GFCI Problems
If the GFCI trips repeatedly, unplug everything on the circuit and reset. Plug devices back in one at a time—the device that causes tripping has an internal ground fault. If the GFCI trips with nothing plugged in, there may be moisture in an outdoor outlet or a damaged wire in the wall. If the GFCI will not reset, the outlet itself has failed and needs replacement.
